Do you want to do yoga but you feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start? Or you feel intimidated? Or maybe you don’t want to do it because you’re not into the spiritual aspect of it that most teachers push? Continue reading then.
I was looking for a yoga video, around the same time I had acquired a new twin obsession for Tia & Tamera Mowry (watch the video I produced with them), when I discovered Tia had a yoga video! The video was great but the best part was the expert leading it, TARA STILES! She’s called ‘yoga rebel’ and the New York Times wrote a great article explaining why – here are the highlights:
TARA Stiles does not talk about sacred Hindu texts, personal intentions or chakras. She does not ask her yoga classes to chant. Her language is plainly Main Street: chaturangas are push-ups, the “sacrum” the lower back.
Ms. Stiles, a 29-year-old former model with skyscraper limbs and a goofball sensibility, focuses on the physical and health aspects of yoga, not the spiritual or the philosophical. For traditionalists, this is heresy, reducing what they see as a way of life to just another gym class.
In the decade since she came to New York, Ms. Stiles has built a business out of breaking those rules. She rejected the city’s yoga scene as exclusive and elitist — it reminded her of the mean girls in high school, only with incense and bare feet. She refused to pledge allegiance to one teacher, one studio or even one style of yoga.
You get the point, Tara Stiles rocks! I love that she’s super straight forward and doesn’t make you feel like yoga is a religion, which many teachers do. Yes I like spiritual but I also just like yoga and feeling healthy and I like that Tara makes it accessible.
Mostly, I love that Tara Stiles is genuinely interested in helping people and making a difference the world. She’s one of my favorites. So, check her out and comment below!
