Romanticizer and Geek-in-Residence

I have a rave that is fairly basic yet worth mentioning.

Maayan visited me this past week and we had an amazing time, naturally. What made it even more amazing was the fact that I got to share something fairly dorky, yet entirely beloved by me, with her.

The shared item in question was the film Labyrinth, a 1980s Jim Henson flick featuring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. It is campy, kooky, and just simply the best.

Of course, I was sure Maayan was going to find this movie ridiculous. I warned her several times that she probably wouldn’t like it, and also said if she found it obnoxious we could turn it off at any second.

I was tenderhooks as we began watching the show together…I waited for her to turn to me and say “sorry Laurencita this is just too weird for me…” And yet, she didn’t. She liked it. She actually liked this bizarre Muppet-filled musical fantasy film. My heart jumped for joy, seriously.

And that’s with this rave is about. Sharing something you adore that’s a little strange with a friend and having them love it too. Is there really any better feeling?

As adults, we’ve learned to serenely navigate our differences with grace and stoicism. But there’s still that little part of us left over from childhood  that just wants your friends to say “I love it too! Isn’t it the greatest?”

It IS the greatest.
