Most of us struggle with some kind of mental hang-ups. (Actually, 1 in 4 of us Americans!) From the mild worries to crushing anxiety/depression, to (for certain Ptok hosts) the insatiable drive to scrub dishes, mental illness or disorders are something to be acknowledged and discussed, rather than hushed up and glossed over. With May named as Mental Health Month, Maayan and Lauren decided to open up and put the topic on the table—what are the most common mental health disorders? And which have we had experience and struggles around?
We also bring up NAMI (the National Alliance of Metal Illness’s) “I will Listen Campaign”, which promotes the idea that we should all be willing and open listeners to those who might be struggling with a mental disorder. (Maayan makes a point that some of us may be MORE equipped than others). But, someone is better that no one!
